The Map Doesn't Lie: How to Read Terrain Like a Public Land Buck

Somewhere around fifteen years ago I bought a book called Mapping Trophy Bucks by Brad Herndon, and it genuinely changed how I look at a piece of ground before I ever set foot on it. That sounds obvious once you say it out loud, but a lot of hunters look at a topo map the same way they'd look at a weather radar, recognizing that something is happening without really translating it into what it means for a deer walking through that spot.

Steep terrain concentrates movement. Deer, like most animals, take the path of least resistance when they can. If you're looking at a hillside with tightly packed contour lines running down to a creek bottom, and you spot one place where those lines spread out just slightly, forming a subtle bench or a gentler pitch, that's very likely a travel corridor. Deer are going to use that easier grade far more often than they climb straight up and down a steep slope for no reason. On flat ground, this same principle applies differently. You're looking less for elevation change and more for subtle rises, depressions, and the kind of terrain feature that isn't dramatic enough to show up as a single bold contour line but still shapes how deer move through it.

Once you start reading contour lines as terrain instead of decoration, certain features start jumping off the map at you. Saddles, the low points between two higher pieces of ground, are some of the most reliable funnels you'll find anywhere. A saddle lets a deer cross a ridge without fully exposing himself on the high point, and bucks in particular tend to favor them, especially during the rut when they're covering ground checking for does. Benches, those flatter shelves partway up a slope, often hold both bedding and travel, since they offer a level spot to lay down while still keeping a view and a scent advantage over the terrain below. Points, where a ridge narrows and juts out before dropping into lower ground, frequently become bedding locations because they let a buck watch and scent-check multiple directions at once from a single spot.

Inside corners, where two field edges or two types of cover meet at an angle instead of a straight line, are another feature worth circling every time you see one on a map. They create a natural pinch point where deer moving along either edge are funneled into the same small area, and they tend to draw daylight movement because they offer cover on two sides instead of one.

Water and Its Effect on Movement

Water shows up on most topo maps in some form, whether it's a mapped creek, a blue line indicating a drainage, or a pond or river you can see clearly on satellite overlay. Water does more than just quench thirst. Creek bottoms and drainages function as travel corridors in their own right, offering cover, an easier walking grade than the surrounding hillsides, and often serving as a natural boundary that funnels deer moving parallel to it.

Pay attention to where a drainage narrows, where it crosses through thicker cover, or where it intersects with a ridge or saddle, since those intersection points are often where multiple funnels stack on top of each other and create the kind of spot that produces consistently. A creek crossing tucked into a saddle, or a drainage running through the pinch point of an inside corner, is exactly the kind of terrain feature layering that separates an average stand location from a genuinely great one.

Reading Cover on Top of Terrain

Topography tells you how deer are likely to move. Cover tells you where they're likely to feel safe doing it. You need both layered together, which is exactly why satellite imagery paired with a topo overlay is so much more useful than either one on its own.

Look for where thick cover overlaps with terrain features that already suggest movement. A saddle running through open hardwoods is a fine funnel. A saddle running through a stand of thick cedars or a tangle of blowdown timber is a much better one, because it gives deer both the terrain advantage and the security cover to use that terrain in daylight. The same goes for benches. A wide open bench might get some travel, but a narrow bench choked with brush is far more likely to hold bedding, because it offers both the terrain and the concealment a mature buck actually wants.

This is also where you start identifying likely bedding without ever walking in to confirm it, which matters enormously on public land where you don't want to be tromping through cover and educating the exact deer you're trying to hunt. Look for the thickest, nastiest cover sitting on a terrain feature that offers some kind of advantage, elevation, a defensible position, multiple escape routes, and mark it as probable bedding. Then work outward from there to figure out how deer are likely traveling from that bedding toward food and water.

Building a Scouting Plan Before You Ever Leave the House

Once you've got a feel for reading terrain and cover together, the actual process of e-scouting a public parcel becomes a lot more efficient. Start wide. Pull up the whole property and look for the obvious terrain features first, the major ridges, drainages, and any dramatic elevation change. Then start narrowing in on the details: saddles, benches, points, inside corners, and anywhere those features intersect with thick cover or water.

Mark everything that looks promising, even if you end up with more spots than you can realistically hunt. That's the list worth actually walking before season, and it's a dramatically more efficient use of your scouting time than wandering a property hoping something jumps out at you.

Confirming It on the Ground Without Wrecking It

E-scouting narrows things down. It doesn't replace actually confirming what you found, but how you go about that confirmation matters just as much as the map work that got you there.

Pick your access route ahead of time based on the same terrain reading you already did, choosing a path that keeps you off the likely bedding and travel corridors you identified. Go in with a plan to verify sign, not to wander around exploring. Look for the kind of confirmation that tells you your map read was correct: rub lines running through the saddle you circled, a well-used trail crossing the creek exactly where you predicted, bedding sign tucked into the thick cover on that bench. If your read was right, you should find sign relatively quickly without needing to walk the whole property.
